Team 1 ( just before their entrance on stage): "i think our proposal is so wild the either we end up first or last, no in-betweens"

Best of luck to all teams!

With only two or three hours of sleep all teams have submitted their presentations right on time. Everyone arrived to IPADE really tired but confident in their previous hard work!

Cinderella act?? not exactly

So, IPADE closes its doors at midnight, but that does not mean that work is over. Our brave competitors are going the extra mile(s) and pushing themselves even further as they work on their proposals at the hotel. It's almost time for them to start thinking about how are they gonna present more than 12 hours of analysis, data crunching, modelling and struggling with the challenge Deloitte has put in front of them... all in 20 minutes!

IPADE will open its door once again tomorrow at 7:30.
Stay tuned!!

Case competition survival 101

So, how in the earth are these guys even surviving the toughness of this contrest?? Well,  there are some basic elements which are absolutely crucial in achieving this:

Exhibit A : caffeine by the bucket! and biscuits!

Exhibit B: insane ammounts of glucose via soda

Exhibit C: some mexican appetizers (a.k.a, empanandas)

Not exactly healthy, but certainly necessary!

Let's see how the second half of this contest turns out to be like

Enjoy!

Will our judge Mario Zavala be as pleased with the proposals as he is with his empanada?

Halftime

"Barriga llena, corazon contento" is a mexican saying that basically means that everything looks merrier and better after you've gotten a good meal. Well, this can apply to our teams after the 7pm dinner, they are up and ready to keep on going!

It's been almost 12 hours since teams received the cases, which pretty much accounts for half of the time they've got. As the mexico city sunlight begins to fade , most teams have gotten a hang of the spreadsheets and, while solutions are not yet so clear, at least the morale has been raised. It's amazing how these guys have been able to make sense of such a massive ammount of informationso quickly, we're eager to hear from them tomorrow!

Keep on the good mood!!

19:30 .... the solution for the case seems far far away!

During the light dinner break, students were really hungry eating everything on their way. They used the time to relax and strech a bit. We heard the comments of many of them, expressing their resignation to continue working until midnight!

Everyone is really worried because time keeps going by and the solution is still far far away!

Cultural differences have not been an issue at all, this Global Case Competition is really promising and we hope that everyteam will have a great experience!

First Impressions of the case

As the time keeps flowing, the teams are having a hard time in developing assumptions and evaluating facts. Some of them saw the light when the lunch time arrived to give themselves a break and to enjoy a delightful meal. During lunch time some of the teams could hardly speak anything but the case.

We went through some of the cubicles where the 8 teams were having their break and these are some of their comments:

"The case is particularly difficult, there are a lot of data, some of them we hardly know if they're relevant or not..."

"We don't think that we will make it untill 24:00... we need more time to finish evaluating all of them..."

"Does anyone konws how the Access program works?"

"This case is really challenging! but the real challenge is to try to get the team to reach a solid conclusion!..."

As you can see, the pressure and stress have dominated the event, but this is part of a case competition! We wish the best of luck to all of the teams!

Work has begun!

Today at 9:00am teams finally got the case: it deals with one of the most complex and sometimes obscure aspects of the strategy of any company, and a make-or-break point that is always on the spotlight: Pricing. This time, teams will be analyzing the price structure of a leading company in the Latin America hand and body care industry,  and they were tasked for a strong proposition on what their new price strategy should be, considering hard data and strategic aspects.

Here it is, looming on the desk of team 2's table

Along with tha case they also got additional data related to historical and estimated prices.  Some of the teams came to call it "an incredibly dense ammount of tables and numbers which still need to be given a meaning".

Excel is in high demand these moments

Teams are currently crunching the numbers and trying to figure out what to do with them. Good luck to all!

Teams are trying to optimize every inch of space, even the walls !

Team 1, feeling a bit "trapped" into the massive ammount of data. Good luck!

The global case competition is about to start!

Hello, and welcome to this blog which is intended to cover everything related to IPADE Global case competition. We are hosting this event on april 7th, 8th and 9th, 2011 (yes, that means it all starts tomorrow!) and we are counting with the support of two higly respected global companies such as Deloitte and Eli Lilly.

Who is participating?
We are thrilled and honored to have an amazingly strong set of participants from the following business schools:
  • Tuck – USA
  • CEIBS – China
  • Darden – USA
  • IAE – Argentina
  • IESE – España
  • Telfer – Canada
  • Rice – USA
  • ... and of course, IPADE –Mexico and Monterrey!
Great, so it all comes to which school will win, right?
Not exactly: unlike most case competitions involving several schools, participants here will not be defending their schools' color. Instead, they are all gonna be mixed into new, random, cross-cultural teams, and then they will have to go through a very, very, intense work session. So in the end, it's gonna be much more challenging (but we also hope enriching) than your average business case competition.

When is this all happening?
Well, it all starts tomorrow with a reception event and team formation, from then, teams will have one day to prepare their proposals in order to present them on saturday, April 9th to the panel of judges

Who will be judging?
Deloitte and Eli Lilly executives will be evaluating these presentations

What is the case gonna be about? Which proposal will win this year? How many kilograms of caffeine will these students take? Will the total sleep hours reach to more than 2? and (perhaps most importantly) what are the prizes? Stay tuned and find out!
